Crusaders on Top for the Last Time in Apollo Stadium

Olivia Woods

The Canterbury Crusaders have claimed the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific championship, defeating the Waikato Chiefs 16–12 in a tense and emotional final at Apollo Stadium in Christchurch. With thousands of fans packed into the stands in a sea of red and black, the game marked not only another title for the Crusaders but also their final match at the iconic stadium, which was built after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. The team is set to move to the new One New Zealand Stadium, currently under construction in the central city.

The match was a low-scoring, hard-fought contest from start to finish. The Chiefs started strong, putting early pressure on the Crusaders, but were held scoreless in the second half. The Crusaders found their rhythm, leaving the Chiefs unable to regain control. Hooker Codie Taylor scored the game’s only try, and Rivez Reihana added 11 points with his boot, sealing the win for the home side.

This victory adds to the Crusaders’ legendary record, securing their 13th official Super Rugby title (15th overall, including New Zealand  competitions) and extending their unbeaten home playoff streak to an incredible 32 games. For fans and players alike, it was a bittersweet farewell to Apollo Stadium — a ground that has hosted countless memorable moments over the decade.

As the Crusaders prepare to enter a new era at One New Zealand Stadium, this final win at Apollo is a perfect send-off. It was a night full of pride, passion, reminding rugby fans across the country why the Crusaders remain one of the most successful and iconic teams in the sport. With a new home coming along the future looks just as bright as the legacy they leave behind.
